Woven Sheets
Textile / Object · 2024
Six woven cotton sheets, each one unique, each two metres tall and 180 centimetres wide.
Photographs are pulled apart into thread and put back together at a scale where the weave is as present as the image. Composed strictly in greyscale, the loom reads tone as density: what looks like a halftone screen is thread count, and the picture only resolves at a distance.
The subject is pain. Not pain as a scene, but as the filter the world is looked at through: an eye behind bare branches, a heart balloon dragged across paving, a mouth that will not stay shut. Emotional dependency runs underneath as a second, quieter register, the part that keeps returning to what hurt it.
The source images were reduced to greyscale and re-read by the loom as density rather than tone: what looks like a halftone is thread count. Pain is the subject: not as a scene, but as the filter the pictures are seen through. Emotional dependency runs underneath it as a second, quieter register.
